Horror movies come and go, but there are only a few so terrifying that they stick with viewers for long and it would be criminal not to include the brilliant in this list. The film starring Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall is based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name and remains firmly in its place as one of the most terrifying films of all time.

Appearing in manna from heaven in 2002, Shelly Duvall clarified that the film was his last run as an actor. Now, after two decades, Duvall is coming out of retirement to star in the next horror movie, The forest hills. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she explains how her break made her even more interested in acting.

I know it’s been a long time but it was great. It really does, it feels good. It makes me want to do more acting. It’s so much fun to act in a movie. I should enjoy every minute of it.

Duvall’s colleagues in the upcoming film seemed honored to work with the “true legend,” as Felissa Rose said. She added that while working with someone like Duvall who “lights up the room and is so honest and genuine,” all a person has to do is match their energy and the scene becomes a breeze. Chiko Mendez also said he couldn’t have made the film without her, adding that “to act is not to act, it is to react.

In addition to her two co-actors, the director of forest hills, Scott Goldberg, himself, had kind words for Duvall. He told PEOPLE that the actress fills the room with kindness and even after her retirement she knows how to be a “true professional. »

It’s great to see the popeye the actress returns to the screens and is so well received and appreciated by the people she works with!

The affect of the brilliant on Shelley Duvall

the brilliant wasn’t just a horror movie, the horrors went deeper than what was shown to the viewers. Duvall, who played Wendy Torrance in the film, came out of filming with a heavy toll on her sanity. Director Stanley Kubrick is known to be a perfectionist in his field. However, this perfectionism did not allow him to give slack to his actors, especially Duvall.

In a video shot by Kubrick’s daughter, the director is heard calling for action. Whatever the reason, Duvall missed his cue and Kubrick had to stop the scene. He is then seen approaching the actress and without wasting time wondering why she missed her cue, he simply berates her stating that she was “wasting everyone’s time. In the documentary shot by Vivian Kubrick, Duvall appears quite happy and satisfied, declaring that without the director, she would not have performed so well.

However, it wasn’t until the documentary was released that the horrors of film sets caught the public’s attention. Kubrick’s treatment of the rising star was not something to be taken lightly. The famous scene where Wendy gently waves a baseball bat in her husband’s face as he talks about breaking his brains out wasn’t as simple as it looks on screen. Kubrick shot the scene 127 times, taking Duvall through exhaustion from the traumatic scene over and over again. 127 takes for one of the most traumatic scenes in movie history and is bound to hurt in more ways than one, which is exactly what happened.

In addition to mental exhaustion, Duvall’s hands were shredded from holding the baseball bat for all 127 strikes. Her voice became hoarse and her eyes were swollen from all the crying. In the end, Duvall had to leave the set completely dehydrated. Duvall herself has spoken of the mental exhaustion she goes through every day.

Waking up on a Monday morning, so early, and realizing that you had to cry all day because it was planned – I would just cry.

In the iconic door scene, Jack Nicholson had to open about 60 doors before Kubrick found a shot he liked. Nicholson tore down the gate with an ax was mostly improvised, and Kubrick kept the details from Duvall. This means that the reactions we see may not be Wendy’s, but Duvall’s.

Kubrick’s toxic professionalism may have played a huge role in turning Duvall away from comedy, but we couldn’t be happier to see her back in action!
