As LYNYRD SKYNYRD approaching 50th anniversary of band’s critically acclaimed debut album “Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd” in 2023, they resonate as deeply with their multi-generational fanbase today as when they first emerged in Jacksonville, Florida in 1973. Few ensembles have had such a profound impact on creating a lifestyle too SKYNYRD has. The band moves forward with a primary mission to celebrate a legacy that honors all those who have made a resounding contribution to the lives of hundreds of millions of fans around the world. Former members Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Ed King, Billy Powell, Bob burns, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson alongside others will forever remain important contributors to this indelible repertoire and the band’s colorful history. Today, LYNYRD SKYNYRD rock with current programming featuring Johnny Van Zant, Ricky Medlocke, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartello, Keith Christopher, Stone Keys, Carol Chase and Stacy Michelle. Gary Rossington continues to have a significant presence and creative influence with the band, while making selective appearances on the road.
The powerhouse of rock and roll spins continuously, and as Van Zant shares: “This is the legacy of LYNYRD SKYNYRD, and what it stands for, what the fans are. There’s nothing quite like going out to play a great show with SKYNYRD and see people love this music.” adds Rossington“We’re still on our feet, still pushing the music forward. We wanted to make the guys who are no longer with us proud, and keep the name proud too.”
With a catalog of over 60 albums, billions of streams and tens of millions of records sold, Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers LYNYRD SKYNYRD remain a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.
“That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” has been around for over half a century, delivering rock, blues and boogie on stage and in the studio to millions of devoted fans. With an iconography as distinctive as their sound, ZZ-TOP is globally recognized with his beards, hotrod cars, spinning guitars and that magical keychain, all of which transcend geography and language.
It was 1969 in Houston when ZZ-TOP merged from the core of two rival bands, Billy Gibbonit is MOVING SIDEWALK and Frank Beard and dusty hillit is AMERICAN BLUES. ZZ-TOPthe release of 1973, “Three men”catapulted them to national attention with the hit “Barn”still one of the band’s signature pieces today. “Eliminator”their 1983 album was something of a paradigm shift for ZZ-TOP. Their blues roots bias was intact and added to the mix were their high-tech age attributes which quickly found a visual outlet with tracks such as “Well Dressed Man” and “Legs” on the nascent MTV. It was one of the first albums in the recording industry to be certified diamond, well beyond gold and platinum, reflecting sales exceeding 10 million units.
As a touring band they have been unrivaled over the past five decades, having performed to millions of fans on four continents and been the subject of their own grammys-nominated documentary titled “That Little Band From Texas”. The composition of the bearded group Gibbons and Hill and Beard, which ironically is clean-shaven, has remained untouched for more than 50 years. When Dusty temporarily left the tour in the summer of 2021, Elwood Francis entered the picture by accepting the directive of Dusty to be the perfect choice to substitute for bass guitar and now takes care of the low-end tasks of the band for the present as well as the future.
The elements that hold ZZ-TOP fresh, enduring can be summed up in the three words of the band’s internal mantra: “Tone, Taste and Tenacity”. True roots artists, they have few peers. Their influences are both at the origin of the form — muddy waters, BB King, Jimmy Roseauet al — as well as British blues rockers and jimi hendrix that emerged generations before ZZancestry.
They’ve sold hundreds of millions of records over their careers, been officially named Texas State Heroes, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (by Keith Richards, no less) and have been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms. They are true rock icons and, against all odds, they really do what they have always done. ZZ-TOP remains !
