Do you remember Carnival Rowthat Prime Video show that, to the best of your recollection, was like a gritty fairy procedural or something, and you’re pretty sure it featured Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne? Probably not, given that the first season was released almost four years ago. Well, here we go again! Yay?
You can blame the pandemic—and Orlando Bloom’s baby– during the long wait between seasons, but in the meantime, the series has become something like a perfect symbol for the evolution of streaming television. It started with a great elevator pitch (magical beings replace refugees in a dystopian world), an accomplished creative team (former Star Trek scribe René Echevarria and Travis Beacham, former screenwriter of Pacific Rim), and an exceptionally famous television cast (the star of Elizabethtown!). He received a season two pickup even before the release of the first season. And when the first season dropped in August 2019, it… got mediocre reviews and not real buzz.
Never one to shy away from sunk costs, Amazon continued the pandemic-delayed second season, which they announced last year would end the series, prompting viewers around the world to remember the existence of the show and to mourn his passing within the space of the same Hollywood journalist article.
If the fate of recent, quickly-canceled the Prime series as paper girls and night sky can tell us anything, Carnival RowThe second season of would not have happened if the series had premiered last year. But 2019 was a different time – the pandemic, the inflation, the cratering of the stock market, the collapse of technology and the implosion of the streaming landscape still far into the future – a time when it still made sense to believe in fairies.
Here’s everything coming to Prime Video, including the comedy’s second season Harlemarriving on February 3 and Amazon-owned and ad-supported Freevee in February 2023.
